Multilingual Culturally Responsible School Psychology
A continuing education certificate program for school psychologists providing specialized training in culturally responsible and inclusive practices to best support culturally and linguistically diverse students in school settings.
The Multilingual Culturally Responsible School Psychology Certificate is designed for school psychologists who are committed to fostering equity and inclusion in their practice.

Utilizing a social justice and equity-focused curriculum, this certificate is for professionals who want to deepen their knowledge, skills, and cultural responsiveness to help create more inclusive and identity-safe environments that best support the mental health needs of culturally and linguistically diverse students, families, and school communities.
Certificate coursework includes foundations in multilingual education and culturally responsible practices related to assessments, consultation, counseling, and direct intervention, as well as a seminar course providing supervision and case consultation support.
For school psychologists seeking to enhance their ability to provide meaningful, affirming support to students from diverse backgrounds, as well as those looking to lead efforts to create more inclusive school environments, this certificate will equip participants with the tools to do so responsibly and effectively.
Certificate Courses & Sequence
Foundations in Multilingual Education (CECP 850)
This course will provide a strengths-based orientation to serving multilingual learners, emphasizing social justice. Content areas will include language acquisition models and the nature of second-language acquisition and proficiency, knowledge and skills to work with linguistically and culturally diverse families, multilingual curricular models and practices, instructional approaches and resources for educators, a history of multilingual education in the US, and legal, ethical, and professional practice considerations.

Culturally Responsible Intervention and Counseling (CECP 853)
This course will build on skills to develop and implement culturally responsible school-based interventions to support academic, social-emotional, and behavioral development of multilingual learners. The integration of multicultural counseling skills as well as cultural adaptations of direct and indirect interventions will be included.

Culturally Responsible Consultation (CECP 852)
This course will build upon previous consultation knowledge to further develop consultation skills specific to providing culturally responsive consultation services in school settings. Content will include the integration of culture and language within the consultation process and increase the knowledge and skills in culturally responsive consultation practices.
Note: Students must have passed advanced consultation prior to enrolling in this course or be a practicing school psychologist.

Assessment of Multilingual Learners (CECP 851)
This course will extend on prior knowledge to emphasize how to incorporate both culture and language within the assessment process to minimize bias and conduct culturally and linguistically appropriate assessments with multilingual learners. Content areas will include knowledge and skills in using a variety of culturally sensitive assessment tools, models for conducting non-biased culturally and linguistically appropriate assessments, and working through an assessment case from the referral question through the results meeting.
Note: Students must have passed Assessment III prior to enrolling in this course or be a practicing school psychologist.

Seminar for Culturally Responsible School Psychologist Practice (CECP 854)
This seminar course for monolingual English speakers is designed to provide consultation support related to culturally responsive school psychology practice and will culminate in the submission of a capstone portfolio to demonstrate knowledge and skills related to supporting culturally and linguistically diverse (CLD) learners in schools. 1 Credit

Seminar for Multilingual Culturally Responsible School Psychologist Practice (CECP 855)
This seminar course for bilingual/multilingual participants is designed to provide consultation support related to culturally responsive school psychology practice and will culminate in the submission of a capstone portfolio to demonstrate knowledge and skills related to supporting multilingual learners in schools. Note: this course is for bilingual/multilingual students. 1 Credit
*Students will take either SPSY 654 or SPSY 655 as their final capstone course in the program. SPSY 654 is for monolingual English speakers; SPSY 655 is for bilingual/multilingual students.

What type of credit can I earn?
Courses through the Center for Community Engagement are offered for 800-level graduate continuing education (non degree-applicable) credit.
Current Lewis & Clark students enrolled in the School Psychology master’s degree program may take the certificate as part of their degree program. See the School Psychology program page for more details.
Can I take just one or two courses in the certificate?
No. This program is offered in a cohort-based model, and courses must be completed in sequence.
When do classes take place?
Courses will most typically be scheduled during the evenings, with possible weekend class sessions. Schedules will be posted prior to course registration.

Program Application & Admission
Application Process
Admission into the Multilingual Culturally Responsible School Psychology Certificate program is handled on an ongoing basis.
All applicants will receive written notification of their acceptance, inclusion on a wait-list, or non-acceptance. Applicants accepted to the program will be sent registration information for their first course.
Wait-listed applicants will be notified if/when space becomes available.
Application Materials and Requirements
A personal essay, resume, and application fee are required. Applicants must be licensed/credentialed school psychologists. Please email ccecerts@lclark.edu with questions.
Application Deadline
Application review will begin March 1st, 2026. Applications will be reviewed and acceptance offers made on a rolling basis. Early application is encouraged.
