Master of Arts in Teaching: Secondary Prerequisites
Applicants to MAT with Preliminary Teaching License: Secondary programs must demonstrate competency in the subject area to which they are applying. Information regarding admissions expectations for art, language arts, mathematics, science, and social studies can be found on the program page.
College and graduate coursework, professional experience as indicated on the resume, personal research, portfolio, audition, and subject area content essays are ways to demonstrate knowledge of a subject area.
We encourage and expect applicants to have prior experience working with children and/or youth. Experience can be gained in school classrooms, mentoring programs, summer camps, tutoring, coaching, or museum programs.
The application fee ($50) and tuition deposit ($100) are waived for MAT applicants applying for 2024 admissions!
Master of Arts in Teaching: Secondary Application Requirements
To receive priority consideration for admission and scholarships, applications and all supporting materials (transcripts, three letters of recommendation, etc.) must be received by the Graduate Admissions office by the January 5 deadline. NOTE: This program does not require test scores for admission.
Admission to the graduate school requires the completion of all standard admissions requirements in addition to the program-specific admission requirements outlined below.
Applicants to the Secondary programs are required to write two essays. Essays may be single-spaced or double-spaced

Describe the issues, questions, or experiences that led you to want to become a teacher. What experiences have you had with children or youth that also contributed to why you believe this is the career field for you? (1-2 pages)

How have your life experiences enriched your perspective on diversity, equity, and inclusion? Can you share instances where you’ve harnessed your strengths and assets, or navigated challenges during your journey towards graduate education? How have these experiences influenced your aspirations and commitment to pursuing a degree with Lewis & Clark? (1-2 pages)
In addition to the two personal essays, please find the link below for your content area’s content knowledge requirement. You are asked to complete a form. This is required of all applicants. The content area form is submitted electronically through the online application.
ART
ENGLISH LANGUAGE ARTS

SOCIAL STUDIES
We require letters of recommendation from three individuals who know you and are qualified to evaluate your academic competence, character and/or experience in professional or leadership roles. Professors, supervisors, and employers are often the best sources. Teachers or administrators who have observed your volunteer or paid experience in the classroom or working with elementary children are also good sources. References from a personal therapist, family members, or friends are not accepted.
All applicants must hold a minimum 2.75 GPA (on a 4.0 scale), or the equivalent in their undergraduate degree.
Applicants who have an GPA of less than a 2.75 on their undergraduate, degree-posted transcript are required to provide a statement that explains their previous academic record
Candidates applying to teach the subject area of Art at the Secondary level must submit a portfolio of artwork with the application. The portfolio can be uploaded using the online application. Please read the Art Portfolio Requirement for more information.

Reapplicants
Application files for the MAT Preservice program are kept for one year. If reapplying for the following year, you will need to submit a new application form and the $50 application fee. If you would like us to use the essay(s), resume, and/or letters of recommendation that were submitted with your old application please notify us of this in writing. If you wish to submit new essays, resume, or letters, send these in with your new application form. The Admissions office will notify you of any additional required documentation. If you are reapplying more than a year from your previous application, you will need to resubmit all required application materials.
