Maddy Haines (she/her) is an artist originally from Tustin, California. She and her partner moved to Portland in August 2022 to join the art therapy program at Lewis and Clark. Maddy received her Bachelor of Science in psychology with a minor in visual arts from Regis University in Denver, Colorado. She is a multimodal artist who enjoys photography, drawing, and print making. Maddy has used art as her own form of emotional processing. It was in her desire to combine art and psychology that she discovered the field of art therapy.
Maddy is currently interning at a local elder care facility where she provides individual and group art therapy to older adults. She is in her final year of graduate school at Lewis and Clark and will graduate with a master’s in art therapy degree in June of 2025.

“What if You Fly?”
Block prints on vellum paper with collage
This project was originally meant to reflect broadly on the diXerent aspects of my life that led me to the field of art therapy. The repetitive carving of the block printing technique in addition to composing collages of personal photographs and mementos were intended to be used as a self-soothing method of self-exploration. Each printed image and collage item was chosen deliberately to reflect core tenets of my life and its eXect. However, in the process of art making, the project became a way to reflect more personally on my growth as a person rather than just that of an emerging art therapist.
