Marriage, Couple, and Family Therapy Prerequisites
Most applicants hold degrees in psychology, family and human development, or related fields; however, applicants with other backgrounds will be considered. Applicants who do not have at least 12 semester units of prior coursework related to human behavior may be required to add additional courses to their program of study.
Marriage, Couple, and Family Therapy Application Requirements
To receive priority consideration for admission to the Marriage, Couple, and Family Therapy Program, the application form and all supporting materials must be received by the Lewis & Clark Graduate Admissions Office on or before the published application deadline.
Applicants to the MA in Marriage, Couple, and Family Therapy Program must submit an essay that addresses all of the topics listed see below. Your essay should be approximately 500 words in length and is submitted electronically as part of the online application.
- What life experiences led to your desire to become a marriage, couple, and family therapist?
- Why are you specifically interested in Lewis & Clark’s Marriage, Couple, and Family Therapy program?
- Tell us about a time in which you received critical feedback that was difficult for you to hear. How did you respond to this? What did you learn about yourself?
All applicants must hold a minimum 2.75 GPA (on a 4.0 scale), or the equivalent in their undergraduate degree.
Applicants who have an GPA of less than a 2.75 on their undergraduate, degree-posted transcript are required to provide a statement that explains their previous academic record

Reapplicants
Application files for all Counseling, Therapy, and School Psychology programs are kept for one year. If reapplying for the following year, you will need to submit a new application form and the $50 application fee. If you would like us to use the essay(s), resume, and/or letters of recommendation that were submitted with your old application please notify us of this in writing. If you wish to submit new essay(s), resume, or letters, send these in with your new application form. The Admissions office will notify you of any additional required documentation. If you are reapplying more than a year from your previous application, you will need to resubmit all required application materials.
