Your choice of an institution should not be limited by the cost of education. Our financial aid program creates solutions to serve students from diverse economic backgrounds. We are committed to working with you to develop financial options and payment strategies that will help make your graduate degree attainable.
Invest in Yourself
We use FAFSA to determine your eligibility for financial aid. Our Office of Financial Aid is here to help you every step of the way.

Hands-On Practicum
Students Spend ~1,000 Hours in a K-12 Classroom by Graduation
- Our bell-to-bell practicum puts you in a real K-12 classroom from the very beginning.
- You’ll gradually increase responsibilities, taking over all classroom tasks for the final 6 weeks of the school year.
Through our unique, yearlong teaching practicum, you’ll have the opportunity for hands-on learning in Portland. You’ll apply your coursework to a real-world environment and gain critical insights that can only be gleaned by working in the field. Our Partnerships and Placements team will review your preferences and desired content area and match you with a qualified teacher-mentor. Working side-by-side, you’ll remain in the same classroom for an entire school year, building trusting relationships with your students, their parents, and school staff. As the year progresses, you’ll gradually take on more and more responsibility, culminating with taking over the classroom and handling all of your teacher-mentor’s tasks for the final six weeks. As a result, school administrators often report that hiring one of our graduates is like hiring a second-year teacher.
Passionate Educators, Powerful Advocates
The experienced faculty members in the Secondary Education MAT Program are committed to ensuring our students’ success, both academically and in their future careers. They’ve not only been teachers themselves, but are considered thought leaders in the field, contributing to groundbreaking research and becoming regularly published in reputable education-industry publications.
Besides teaching, we want our graduates to be educational leaders who work in their schools and larger communities to disrupt inequities in order to make sure that every child receives a robust and nurturing education.

Frequently Asked Questions
You will need to have a strong background in the subject area that you wish to teach. This may involve a college major or minor or other extensive academic work in the field you are planning to teach. Advisors review transcripts of applicants to determine if additional coursework may be required before qualifying for admission.
The following are the available subject areas for high school teacher candidates at Lewis & Clark:
- Art
- English language arts
- Mathematics
- Science
- Social studies
No, the only licensure program we currently offer is a full-time program in which you will complete all of the requirements for an Oregon teaching license and will obtain a Master of Arts in Teaching degree.
Once admitted to the program, you will be asked to complete a Placement Application where you may indicate your preferences. It is very important that you allow the placements to be done by the college. Do not contact the schools directly or it may jeopardize your placement and the process and procedure that must be followed.
We believe your student teaching practicum should expand your network of professional contacts and enhance your educational experience. For this reason placements will not be made in schools where students have been previously employed, where the student attended, where a relative works, or where their children attend/have attend.
